Perkins is a lot closer to that QB2 status than some may think as indicated by this decision.
But it comes at a cost. Now, the Rams will need to prune the necessary roster spots elsewhere.
I think the main thing to remember with Perkins is how good he looked compared to just how raw and inexperienced he is. While he wasn't perfect, he didn't look overwhelmed and even though it isn't a primary QB skill, his escapability is elite. Whether or not he'll be able to read and process at the NFL level is still unknown but his arm is strong enough and his timing will improve as he acclimates and gains experience.
All in all, his physical tools seem to have made him a worthwhile project to McVay and I can't disagree. Wolford is likely being groomed as a coach and in the next year or two, Perkins will need to step into that QB2 role.
