Age along the offensive line and the defense with some bad draft choices collapsed so much under Fitz Shurmur, Robinson hired Jeff Fisher in 91 to switch to a 3-4, which was a total disaster. In 90 the offensive line had some issues not holding up well in pass protection, leading to Everett becoming gun shy as posted earlier, but the defense was a total mess. They gave up a ton of points that year, but the some bad picks caught up to them, especially at running back with the pick of Gaston Green over Thurman Thomas for example.
The secondary was really bad too Kevin Greene had 13 sacks, the next closest that year was Mike Piel with 5 and he was a good backup not a starter. Rams compounded the epic fail with letting Shurmur go and replacing him with Jeff Fisher, who went with the 4-3 defense and the Rams did not have the personnel for that, plus their best player on defense Greene was handcuffed and then went to Pittsburgh. Just the beginning of a bad time being Ram fans and a sad way for John Robinson to go out.
What was worse was in 1992, John Shaw suggested to Georgia she should hire 49ers Assistant Mike Holmgren as Head Coach, but Georgia overruled Shaw and brought back Chuck Knox because Georgia said Carroll Rosenbloom always regretted letting Knox go, but as I look back, the Rams were going to hire Bill Walsh in 78, but went with George Allen at the last minute and in 1992, Shaw stumped hard for Holmgren, but Georgia brought back Knox and she gave Knox total autonomy, so when many blame Georgia for losing on purpose, the truth is, Knox was president of football operations and made every personnel decision from 1992-1994.
