over thinking 101

I agree that it wouldn't be a good look for McVay. It adds to Kittle getting drafted in the 5th round of that same draft by Shanahan (who was OC during Reed's best years). It reinforces that Shanahan is the true offensive genius and McVay is just a very good head coach and evaluator.

On the other hand, Stafford had a great connection with Hock so the true measure may be how well Stafford does with Higbee this season. Higbee has had some fantastic games over the last few years but more often is very quiet.
Was that:
- Goff not finding him?
- Higbee blocking more because of OL deficiencies?
- McVay scheme choices?

As to Everett. He had some great YAC plays and even some awesome up the middle blocking as H-back but he never seemed to be able to put it all together. He had some surprising drops that hit him in the chest. Didn't feel like Goff trusted to throw to him much and his number wasn't called a lot. Will be interesting to see how he does on the Seahawks. In general I expect him to be sort of the same as the Rams. Some wow plays but not a game changer most of the time.

Everett may be a better fit in SF. He also may not be. Higbee isn't going to see that much action and in Detroit, Hock IS going to see a lot of action--that's just circumstances.

It's a tangled web of misleads to try and figure out who is better at what on the basis of a few TEs. Way too many variables. My honest bet is, we are not going to learn much of anything about anyone discussed here--Stafford, Goff, Garapollo, Shanahan, McVay--on the basis of how 2 TEs do in 2021. Again, way too many variables. That's the kind of scenario that leads fans to just make up these conclusions based on speculation plus stats which for all they know they are just misinterpreting.

And McVay does not set the drafts or call the draft shots so what happened with Kittle isn't a judgment of him. Truth is 32 teams passed on Kittle multiple times. The Rams drafts are collaborative--the old adage is, coaches scout 1 month a year and scouts scout 12 months a year. McVay's work in Rams drafts is to let Snead know what KIND of players they want on offense. Snead then comes back with a short list and they both go over that. Then the Rams set the draft board collaboratively--as a group, coaches and personnel people included. They then stick to their rankings on draft day. As an example of this, McVay did not "choose" Everett--Snead has said that he knew about Everett in 2016. Snead brings players to McVay's attention so McVay does not have to look at every TE in a draft for weeks, that's not how it's done.
