They are naming starters early and developing a cohesive #1 unit.

That doesn't mean they can't change a spot in the process. Like if Evans falters there are guys behind him.

What all that means is

1. this constant, universal cross-training we saw in previous years is over. Some depth guys will cross-train, obviously, cause (for example) you need Brewer to be able to play both guard spots and ROT. But the 5 starters are set in their positions and are working together toward unit cohesion. Before, everyone cross-trained.

2. There is no one behind Corbett, really. I base that on hunches in reacting to things they're saying and not saying.

You believe that coaches are ‘all in’ with Corbett at OC? That Shelton, Allen, and Anchrum are merely relegated to backup OC candidates?

Yes. I think they named their number 1s and unless someone falters that will be how it is going forward. That is a huge advantage. No longer cross-training all the #1s will do them a world of good. It will allow much greater unit cohesion.

BTW no Rams source has mentioned Anchrum working at center though on paper it makes sense.

As it stands today, I think Allen and Shelton are subpar (and the Rams know it).

....

So...

You’re saying that the Rams have put all their ‘starting OC eggs’ in the Corbett basket?

To the point that they ignored highly rated OC’s in the draft that fell to them despite lacking faith in Allen, Shelton, and Anchrum at OC? If true, what do they do if Corbett gets injured?

Does that sound like prudent decision making by a very smart FO?

I am not sure what you are arguing with exactly. It's actually traditional to name starting OL early and then develop that as a unit all through the pre-season. That's how it is commonly done. The Rams have done it like that more times than not, and I mean specifically at center (though what I say applies to the entire OL). They did it with Allen in 2019 and with Blythe in 2020.

When it;s NOT like that the Rams, like most teams, have announced that there is competition at the position.

If a guy shows he cannot handle the spot, then, yeah they replace him.

And yes that is prudent decision making by a smart FO. In fact it's the kind of prudent decision making you see with every smart FO. You name the starter at a demanding OL spot and then have the #1s practice together a lot to achieve maximum unit cohesion--unless you're not in a position to do that, in which case you make it clear it's a competition. And in the "name the #1s early" approach (which the Rams have NEVER not done at center), if a guy falters, you have to see if he can be replaced.

Anyway. In my post you missed the real point. Since the Rams have always named their starting center early, I didn't take that point as controversial. I thought that could be taken for granted.

My REAL point is, they are not putting the starters through cross-training, like they did in 2019, but are instead working on unit cohesion with the #1s. I think the advantages of that are multiple and that it's a better strategy.

Don’t believe that the names of Rams starters at OC and RG are written in stone quite yet...

Turns out that Evan’s shortcomings at RG were probably the biggest factor….
