Well thought out post.
I get that you're not sold on Lewis but are you convinced that a rookie comes in and immediately starts over him even if Lewis was healthy?
I think it's kind of a turkey shoot in terms of who would come in and immediately be felt. Some of them are iffy as far as being blindside but that's what you get in round 2. The guys who are more certain go early.
So let's say Perkins who has what looks like a blindside talent but who is going to need a little time. As a rook though and in this defense he'd fit nicely to give us a nice look on third down and obvious passing downs because his speed rush might play early. Or maybe Ossai who is a recent convert to edge and has some really nice upside, same deal take him and put him in rotation. Or Tryon who is big and explosive and needs coaching and reps. There's a lot of options that seem to be slotting around 57 on different sites. Any of those types if they do hit on them then they'd end up starting for us with most snaps of course just a matter of when.
Either way what matters from the roster building side is do you want to trust in Lewis and Oko to get you to the Super Bowl. Lewis will probably get hurt. Oko is developing but he's more an all around type guy than a gifted rusher. So I look at it as a need from that perspective.
I think some of them may play early. I like Tryon myself. But as you noted, they will all need coaching, reps, and development. Personally, I don't think any of them would play much over Hollins and Lewis in 2021.
Besides, we had a SB worthy defense last year with a rotation on the blind side. I think we can get to the Super Bowl with the Hollins/Lewis/Oko rotation.
