I don't know if we can ever know when someone who hasn't gotten a ton of snaps is ready to step into a full time role but we can pay attention to encouraging or discouraging signs for clues.

One encouraging sign is that in training camp it was reported that D. Will and Long were in a heated battle for the starting position. Given how well William's played this year that has to bode well for Long's readiness.

In looking at Long's limited snaps I was neither impressed or discouraged that he could be a starter. Maybe others have a different impression.
