Just because we as fans want something doesn't mean the team can make it happen within any practical, sound business logic.
I have no doubt that McVay thinks highly of Floyd. And would love to keep him....and JJ..... and Hill.....
But there is this thing called the cap. And whether or not one thinks the Rams have screwed up with some of the long term signings that haven't panned out, it is what it is. You can't manufacture space out of thin air, nor can you decimate the rest of your team unless you are dealing with a generational player like Ramsey or AD..... which Floyd is not.
I do hope (but think it highly improbable) that some kind of a team friendly deal will be worked out with Floyd. But my guess is that the Chargers go hard after him, and if not them, someone else that runs a 3-4.
But never underestimate the AD effect. It's no coincidence that pretty much every edge rusher that comes in has a career year because AD so screws up blocking assignments. Heck even Matthews was on his way to a great year until he broke his jaw and missed several games.
The upside to this is that there probably is some aging vet or under performing higher draft pick Edge player out there that will be available and whose agent will do whatever it takes to get him on the Rams for a year, in hopes of setting him up for a big FA deal the following year.
