Re: I think we need a moratorium on McVay

I was reading the game time forum and flicking back and forth with the NFL site whilst the game was on last night.

As usual, there were people ripping McVay and I can only presume, thinking they could call a better game.

Seriously though?

Here is the guys record after taking over a #@$* team.

LAR 2017 11 5 0 .688 1st in NFC West
LAR 2018 13 3 0 .813 1st in NFC West
LAR 2019 9 7 0 .563 3rd in NFC West
LAR 2020 10 6 0 .625 2nd in NFC West

Is there a single member on this board that wouldn't have gone mental with delight at the thought of that record when we had Fisher guiding us to just below mediocrity?

I'm not saying don't question this or that call, of course, that is what we do as fans.

But claims that he's clueless or doesn't know what he's doing are beyond the pale.

There are some very knowledgeable posters on this board, but I wouldn't want any taking over the helm of taking over my playoff bound Rams (for the 3rd in 4 years) at this moment.

McVay has banked a lot of equity in my book and I doubt 19 out of 20 coaches or less would have done what he did.

In Sean, I Trust, and so should you.

At least for now.

The question is not his record, it's how he handles adverse situations generated by certain kinds of defensive fronts and systems that stymie him. That's a real thing and you can have a strong record in most of your games and still have that issue.

I will leave out 2019 because the OL was a mess all year and that messes with the entire analysis--if the OL is a problem, you are not really in a position to judge what's working and what's not because so much is thrown off kilter.

But looking at 2018 and 2020 here are the defensive attacks that stymied him and he was slow to adjust to them. In all cases one of the things that gets attacked and thrown out of sync is OL play.

2018 Detroit
2018 Chicago
2018 New England
2020 Miami
2020 SF
2020 Jets
2020 Seattle

Here;s a very telling comment from the Football Outsiders' take on the 2nd Seattle game: "Seattle's secret weapon in this game against the Rams was linebacker K.J. Wright, whom they threw on the line of scrimmage as a walked-up SAM.... Against the Rams, specifically, getting Wright on the line of scrimmage helped Seattle align in odd fronts while still playing from their base 4-3 or nickel 4-2-5 personnel. The Rams' wide zone offense notoriously struggles with odd-front defenses that load up players along the line of scrimmage."
