In the NFL Championship game between the Rams and the Browns ( I was lucky to be there) in 1951 at the Coliseum the Rams started HOF Qb Waterfield at the beginning of the game and then started HOF VanBrocklin in the 2d half. This was by design as they had done that before and had nothing to do with either qbs performance. It forced the great Paul Brown (HC of Cleveland) to plan two separate defenses depending on which qb was playing. Waterfield was a more running qb, having played safety for the Rams along with being the qb. VanBrocklin was more of a pure drop back qb. Waterfield also did the punting, extra points, and field goals. The game was back and forth-very tight-until the 4th qtr when VanBrocklin threw a 73 yd bomb to Tom Fears for the winning td. Rams 24 Browns 17.
Rams could do the same Saturday forcing Carroll to plan two separate defenses -one for Goff and one for Wolford.
History is good.
