Re: It comes down to standards

The defense being bad is a settled matter. Everyone agrees on that.

I showed you 9 games that are below the average on offense so it's more than 3 games that are lowering the average. And that's kind of a factual matter.

But I too agree, it's no need to go back and forth.

I figured out why we rarely agree on this stuff. It comes down to, I have higher standards than what you typically present.

I'm fairly certain the coaches are unhappy with only scoring 20 points. (Again, no need to bring up the D since I'm sure they're unhappy with that too.) I'm very grateful the coaches have higher standards than excusing subpar offensive outputs.

No we have different approaches. Mine is much more history based--I am not looking at presumed "standards." I also don't immediately assume that some abstract average number for their scores this year is going to be caused by something bad. It might be but I don't automatically assume that.

What I offered was a contextual look at what scoring means this year. I did not declare it was good or bad, improvable or not. I am less interested in some compulsion to judge than I am in the drive to understand. Understanding includes nuance and to me, the sheerly judgmental view, which I don't share, gets in the way of that. So for example I pointed out that several games this year McVay refused to consider the score and began his "crash out downs and take time off the clock by running" routine early in the 4th quarter. He is less interested in scoring when they have the lead, and that's apparent. Now noticing that we have to ask why, though truth is we really don;t know.

I also pointed out that the apparent higher scoring in 2019 was deceptive because several times they ran up high scores in losing efforts.

Meanwhile, and you do acknowledge this, the apparent lower scoring in 2020 is influenced by games where the real flaw is showing up unprepared to compete at a high level and as a result, putting Goff out there without much for him to do about it. IE the bad games. The question then becomes, what are they like when they are not in one of the bad games? And the scoring is higher, of course. (And to be fair he had the same struggles in the Jets game as he did in other "team no-show" games but unlike the Miami or 2nd SF game did not meltdown as a result. He struggled but did not press. It's funny that so many people fear the many-fumbles games by Goff and didn't even notice that put back in the same circumstances, he did not press and make multiple costly mistakes. Exact same circumstances, different result).

I'm just reluctant to be categorical about these things.

Can this team score more? Sure when they can count on a strong, consistent running game. That just seems to be how McVay works--for whatever reason. Without that McVay's instinct is to play it safe.

If they were losing I would care. They're not, I don't. Or--they're not losing because McVay is in play it safe mode. The losses have more to do with a young team not rising to the occasion against what they see as inferior opposition.

CAN THEY put up points? Actually they have--like against Arizona, up until they just flat turned it off in the 4th quarter.
