The Rams made 3 trades on 10/15/19 that shaped this team

December 17, 2020 03:38PM
It seemed like the general NFL fan thought the Rams got a bad deal in the trade with the Ravens.

On Oct 15, 2019, the Rams sent Marcus Peters to the Ravens and got Kenny Young and 2020 5th round draft pick.
On Oct 15, 2019, the Rams sent a 2021 5th round pick to the Browns for Corbett.

With these two trades, the Rams traded away Marcus Peters and got Corbett, Kenny Young and improved their draft position a little as a future pick is valued lower.

The Rams needed to improve the offensive line as they did not give Saffold a contract and Sullivan's career came to an end. The Rams did improve the offensive line and Corbett has been a part of it.

The Rams probably already knew they could not give Littleton a contract. They needed inside linebacker help. Kenny Young has made some contributions.

On Oct 15, 2019, the Rams sent two first-round picks (2020 and 2021) and a fourth-round selection (2021) for Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
The Ramsey deal was such a blockbuster trade it has to be judged on its own. The Rams must have known what they had in D. Williams and what they wanted to get with Ramsey. Jalen did sign long term and is a foundational player on a championship level defense.

The NFL trade deadline is still a couple of weeks away, but that didn't stop the Rams from getting a jump on other clubs. Los Angeles was part of three deals Tuesday, sending starting cornerback Marcus Peters to Baltimore, acquiring second-year Brownsoffensive tackle Austin Corbett, then completing a blockbuster trade with Jacksonville for Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey in exchange for two first-round picks (2020 and 2021) and a fourth-round selection (2021).

As part of the Marcus Peters-for-Kenny Young trade, the Rams also received a 5th-round pick, per source. Rams would have gotten a 2021 3rd- or 4th-round comp pick for Peters...so instead they get a 5th a year earlier, and a young player they liked last year - and saved money.

Browns trade C Austin Corbett to Rams for a fifth-round pick
Oct 15, 2019

BEREA, Ohio -- Austin Corbett moved around on Cleveland's offensive line. His next stop is Los Angeles.

The Browns traded Corbett, who failed to live up to high expectations after being selected with the No. 33 overall pick in the 2018 draft, to the Rams on Tuesday for a fifth-round draft pick in 2021.

Corbett was viewed as a potential long-term answer at left tackle when the Browns took him with the first pick of the second round -- two before they nabbed star running back Nick Chubb. But Corbett hasn't developed as quickly as the Browns had hoped and general manager John Dorsey decided it was time to move him.

The 6-foot-3, 306-pounder played in 11 games as a rookie, making one start. Corbett appeared in three games this season.

Corbett was given a shot to win the starting job at right guard at training camp, but he was beaten out by Eric Kush. He's been listed as Cleveland's backup center behind JC Tretter.

Dorsey found a trade partner in the Rams, who have been in the market for a starting left guard since Joe Noteboom suffered a season-ending right knee injury during their loss to San Francisco on Sunday.

Los Angeles also needed to add some depth up front. Jamil Demby has been the sole backup at both guard spots, and he hasn't played particularly well in his chances to fill in for Noteboom and Austin Blythe.

The Rams' line was a durable strength of coach Sean McVay's offense during his first two seasons, but the entire group has taken a noticeable step back in 2019. Los Angeles elected to part ways with two key veterans -- left guard Rodger Saffold and center John Sullivan -- while replacing them with 2018 draftees Noteboom and center Brian Allen, but neither newcomer has impressed.
