I think Staley serves himself best if he stays for three years.
This is his first year as coordinator. McVay had at least three ears under his belt.
But as fresh as Mcavay was his first year, defensive coordinators started to figure him out. Humans detect patterns amd it took awhile for defenses to catch up.
Staley is now fresh. But his patterns will be detected next year and the year after that.
McVay is clearly always studying and learning. So he’s worked through a lot of issues. But he did that with three some years of offensive coordinator experience to draw from and this helps him as a head coach.
Also, Staley’s concepts are aided by two elite talents on his defense. What if he can’t find those guys in his next job?
Staley, like all coaches, will prefer the best situation. He’ll want the talent to help him with his scheme.
But with all the responsibilities of head coach, he might not have the time and chops tor handle those offensive coordinators that have figured his scheme out.
It would benefit him tremendously to stay in the lab a few years to see how his formula sets in.
