The answer is because McVay is dealing with limited options in that backfield. Vinny mentioned this past offseason that a knock he heard from the staff re: Hendy was that he couldn't grasp the offense. Here we are in year two and the guy is still lining up wrong pre-snap which is a really bad indicator. The other guy Akers is a rookie and doesn't have the offense down either. And even Brown who has been in this offense you see lining up wrong and being corrected by Goff pre-snap.
The Rams probably have simplified things for them. But another thing with the run game is it doesn't have to be complicated. It's a few guys in a key area beating the other guys. Or not. Rams have done a good job winning those in most games, but not vs SF or Tampa or Miami. Thing is those same backs are missing seams too so maybe we'll see the Rams start feeding Akers and as we've discussed in other threads I believe that time is very close.
Re: Gurley we still miss not only his elite ability before he got hurt but also his smarts. He could do everything in this offense. McVay is still trying to replace that.
