who am I leaving off... there are a few there I would poke

I don't have high hopes for a young "name" guy or even established vets who become available. The Rams are going to have to take a big cap hit to get rid of Goff so that means we're looking at a QB who is willing to play on the cheap for some reason. I don't see Stafford, Ryan, Wentz, Dak, Newton, Cousins or even Garoppolo fitting that bill. So, Darnold, Haskins, Trubisky and Fitz are left.

Darnold would be nice but I still remain skeptical about the Jets trading him cheaply enough for the Rams to afford him or that they would cut him. Haskins I don't want. Trubisky seems like a lateral move but he may actually improve under McVay. Nagy seems pretty lousy so there may actually be some hope for MT. Fitz might be a good placeholder.

Another placeholder possibility might be Alex Smith. I think the Redskins will be in the QBOTF market and I think they will be willing to cut ties with Smith now that he's healthy. I think they felt obligated to keep him on after the horrible injury out of some feeling of responsibility and decency but that won't carry over to next year. At 36, Smith isn't an ideal choice nor a choice for the future but he may be a decent, affordable stop gap. Because what we're looking for is a QB who can produce a little and not screw things up. Smith fits that description. Not only that, as much as he's been a game manager throughout his career, he's actually got some impressive post season games when given the chance to actually air it out a little. 97.4 passer rating in 7 post season games. 5/7 of those games he had zero interceptions. 14/2 overall.

Smith doesn't instill a huge sense of confidence BUT, we're talking about a Rams team that has a window right now. I would like to be able to take advantage of that. Sadly, a QB that just won't screw up is a step up for this team. Smith would be attainable and affordable, experienced and potentially productive. Not sexy but realistic.
