RE: Expecting too much

November 02, 2020 11:26AM
You are on to something but I think it is more than that. Is Kyle expecting too much of JG or is Peterson asking too much of CW?
I think McVay needs a better pulse of his offensive playmakers and primarily Jared Goff as QB. I find it interesting that Cooper Kupp has also looked lost and developing stone hands. Goff is now tentative with his throws because his WR are not adept at jump balls or catching balls over the shoulder. They are best when Jared places the ball right on them and that is a problem when the QB is so affraid to turnover that he is throwing the ball away or hesitant to cut it lose. We may not have the correct personel to fulfill McVay's vision but he has to work better with what he has and if he feels Goff is still legitimate then he has to work with Goffs strenghts. Goff shows that he can play better in a lost cause where he can throw caution to the wind. If McVay wants to shorten games and play to the strength of his personel he also has to do a better job of creating options and winnable situations. He needs to recognize and adjust to player behavior in game performance and have a plan that gets players in and on the field who will execute or give a better effort.

WR are even more engaged in the blocking and are making errors in the protections as well as the routes and catching. Yes these great these great WRs are dropping passes. NE got physical with Holt, Bruce and Faulk and they looked less than themselves in the biggest game. We see our WRs looking slower and less aware and that is something the coach has to address. The TE targeting is questionable. The QB needs the TE to help add a comfort level as a target. How is that missing from week to week. We have regressed and that doesn't stop at Goff. We have 2 rookies we drafted high and had high hopes for and they are struggling to get on the field and are not being featured to their strengths. I see yong WRs beign used by their respective teams. McVay has to figure this out.

McVay's instincts are to attack and impose his will on the other team, but it requires very good, consistent execution from the QB. Is he maybe over-estimating Goff's ability? We have a solid O-line, very good receivers and TE's, 3 good RB's and a very good defense. Maybe Jared is best as a game manager. A bit like what Kyle S. has done with Jimmy G in San Fran or Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee.

If you look at the game yesterday, instead of expecting Goff to beat the zero pressure over and over, run more max protect and 12 personnel and kick field goals, punt, try and protect the football / gain the field position advantage and minimize the turnovers. We could have easily won that game 9-3 or 12-7 or whatever.
