The fact that the Rams pass the ball well opens up the running game. As bad as Fisher was without understanding that concept, the other coaches between Martz and McVay didn't get it either very well.
It is simple. The more space you have because of a good passing game, the better you run the ball, the better the runs per carry, which equals first downs, and more plays which gets you more runs which gives you space and unpredictability. Unpredictability allows you to open up the playbook, which equals big plays.
Fisher proved the faulty thinking in forcing runs and his worst offense of all times was clear evidence.
