Let's consider the situation before we cast doubt on Goff. The offensive line just allowed a free rusher from the interior. McVay has hinted that Goff wasn't reading the defense correctly. McVay didn't have time to re-teach the offense between 1st and 2nd down. I have no problem with being conservative there.
For those lamenting that he was too conservative, how did you feel when he went for it on fourth down in his own territory against the Bills and didn't convert?
This isn't a timid coach. This is a smart coach.
Well, I am not casting doubt on Goff, in case you're saying that. I also don't think he's a timid coach. I was actually disagreeing with the idea that he was that. I also don't expect him to react to one poor play by expecting another. I think the differences between the Bills game and the Giants game is that the Rams were constantly accounting for New York's big, high quality DL. I think they chose under those circumstances to take the FG points against the NYG DL and to count on, in turn, the Rams D to overwhelm the Giants OL. So to me, making a calculated bet while weighing the other side's strengths and weaknesses is just not a "is he bold or timid" kind of question.
