Here's a more relevant stat not published...how many NFL GM's and D Coordinators would choose any defender over Aaron Donald if they could vote anonymously? Would it be over or under 60 out of 64?
If a D Coordinator asks his player to penetrate a line rather than hold a two gap and the offense counters to a run on the other side of his rush, does that reduce the D Lineman's grade in this evaluation process? If so, this is as much an evaluation of scheme as it is player performance. So...who the hell cares?
This stat is every bit as worthless as the reminder that 85% of all traffic accidents occur within 5 miles of a person's home. This makes you think you're more at risk until you realize...you do 85% of your driving within 5 miles of your home. This is the definition of a worthless statistic. To say a penetrating lineman won't grade as well in run defense as opposed to a space eater shows nothing more than a bias of scheme within this evaluation method.
Now that I've vented, I'm good. I do not care at all about this statistical method.
