True. And I think coaches also often deserve perspective based on teams they are developing. A 6-10 or 7-9 season can be good if you are taking over a dumpster fire (case in point Jeff Fisher in 2012 and 2013, actually...). And Vermeil did a good job developing the Eagles even before their 1980 run. Though in St. Louis he didn't elevate the Rams from their 1990-96 status, it simply continued two more seasons until the stars aligned in 1999.
I think Coryell's 1981 Chargers simply ran out of gas having the OT game at Miami and then having to travel east again to frigid Cincinnati the next weekend. But that's what-if speculation. Just like I believe Vermeil and the Rams would have had greater, extended success (and maybe a 2nd ring) had he not retired after the Super Bowl. But that too is speculation.
