I doubt Blythe has control over whom to block in the run game. This block he has to make is usually critical to the success of the outside zone scheme and not uncommon. It is a very hard block to make successfully. Pass game I think Goff is calling the protections but it is hard to tell with any certainty.
Blythe has a man in the gap to his side--lets say left side in this example. Blythe needs to snap the ball, get to the left or at a minimum face up with the dl and then push him back and to the right. Vs. Seattle their DT when lined up in the A gap was penetrating--not two gapping. This is probably the hardest block for an offensive lineman to make--if anyone has other ideas let me know.
I think the idea with giving the center this difficult block is that you dont need perfection, more like limit penetration and slow the dt down. The rb will be taking the run away from the dt usually and thus the dt isnt in position to make a play. But I'm no outside zone expert but that would be my best estimate.
