That was the "Bootleg" game. At one time I think the announcer said out of 12-14 or so pass plays 8-9 were counter action bootlegs. McVay knew our OL couldn't protect Goff if that wasn't the case, hence the game plan to get Goff out of the pocket with misdirection. Call it good game planning if you wish and maybe it was, but it was necessitated by his fear of getting Goff bludgeoned. McVay simply did his best to overcome a weakness.
