The evaluation of this draft by many is based on the perception of what the Rams needs are. Many on the board and people like Kiper feel that the Rams #1 need is OL and see the failure to draft an OL high as a failure. Right or wrong Snead & McVay did not see OL as a pressing need and they seem to feel the same way for ILB.
Most agree that last year the OL was bad and under performed. On the bright side we did add Corbett and our young OL got thrown into the fire and go experience. Additionally we lost Havs, Boom and Allen to injuries for much of the year. I have to believe that Snead/McVay know what they have on the OL and feel secure that the line will improve next year. This was a pretty good year for lineman and they could easily have drafted on with value in the 2nd round. We have already invested in the line and we will see how those investment pay off.
The Rams addressed what they thought were their biggest needs in the 1st 4 picks and I it seems like they got guys that will be able to play quickly. Maybe not start but they all have a good chance of fighting their way into the rotation. They all see to have very good upside so I think that is very positive.
The TE pick does not seem to be a need pick but a very high value pick and someone that fits McVay offense perfectly. He is also a guy that is probably ready to play right away in a rotational role though unless someone get hurt or traded he may end up sitting a while.
The later round picks are all crap shoot picks and while non of the thrill me that is usually how it goes.
Overall if I trust Snead/McVay to evaluate the team needs correctly then I really like this draft. I think we have 5 guys that can become starter quality in time which to me is a big haul.
