The other part of that equation is this: only the top 51 players under contract count against the cap.

According to overthecap.com, the Rams’ rookie draft pool is $5.876 million.

But when the Rams sign their 7 draft picks then the guys in the bottom seven spots in the top 51 drop off. Those 7 guys make $610,000 a year each, totaling $4.2M. So at the same time the Rams add $5.876M to their cap the also drop $4.2M from their cap ... resulting in a net increase of $1.276M. [theramswire.usatoday.com]
