This is the time of year where you want to add athletic freaks to your roster.
There’s IMO three tiers of freaks:
There’s the skill position freaks. They mostly exhibit speed and quickness and can range in a broad spectrum of height and weight.
There’s the LB, FB, TE tier.
There’s the OL, DL/DE tier.
In the second tier, there’s an interesting combination of size and speed. Von Miller at the combine came in at 6’3”, 250 and ran a 4.5 40. Derek Henry identical 6’3”, 250 4.50 40. Sampson Ekubam is not a Pro Bowl caliber player, but his combine numbers 6’3, 240 and ran sub 4.5.
Leonard Fournette at the combine 6’3”, 240, 4.51 40. The smaller Christian McCaffrey ran a 4.48 40.
We all get that what goes on between the ears is essential, but that can be an issue for anyone at any size.
But as far as measurables Fournette is in that rare realm of players and I think you’ve got to try to secure that with a low pick in the draft when you don’t have a chance at that with pick #52.
To circle back, this is the season to add freaks to your roster.
