it is what it is.
Its a bad situation. Esp for Gurley, who is really close to being retired by age 27. With all the secrecy and how testy he answers questions about his health, you can tell he is hanging to something he deeply loves for dear life, and it is slipping away.
But these are the cap hits the Rams would take every year on Gurley:
2020 - current cap # - 17.25m - if cut - 25.65m - trade 12.6m So this year it either costs you 8.4 to cut or only saves you 4.6 to trade
2021 - current cap # - 13.20m - if cut - 8.40m - trade 8.40m So either way its going to cost the Rams 8.4m and only saving them 4.8m. That ain't great
2022 - current cap # - 14.20m - if cut - 4.20m - trade 4.20m So again, either way he is costing you 4.2m, but the good news is you save 10m.
So really, for a team that seemingly does not like dead money, 2022 is the best year to let him go, but that requires you carry him for 2 years. And I'm not sure McVay is willing to gameplan around an unpredictable Gurley for that long.
