To be fair, Saffold's replacement, Noteboom, got hurt in Week 6 and missed the rest of the year. Had he played the whole season it might have been a different story....and no he wouldn't have been as good as Saffold.... but he was considered their best young lineman going into the season.
Wasn't Noteboom graded as the Rams' worst lineman at the time he got injured? I think someone posted that information here and I also remember having the thought that the line play certainly couldn't get any worse without him.
Here';s some details in the "it was Noteboom" story that reveal that it's mostly myth.
1. when the season started the big problems were the 2 OTs. Remember, the entire Rams OL graded badly. Putting that on one player doesn't work. It's not realistic.
2. when the OL began to step up, it was in large part because Whit improved and Hav was out. Edwards and Evans were an improvement on the right side.
3. Everyone associated with the Rams has said that before he was injured, Noteboom was improving after a shaky start. Apparently some fans didn't see that though--and I take it that's on them.
