I wouldn't really define Cooks as a 'role player'. Yes, I mean he is more of a deep threat than Woods or Kupp is- so he plays that "role" more. But as a guy that caught 80 passes last year and 300+ over the previous 4 years total he is far from a one trick pony.
Well, being a role player and being a one trick pony are not the same thing.
Avery and Givens were one trick ponies. That's because they could not run other routes effectively, and so were easy to figure out.
A good deep threat like Cooks or D.Jackson doesn't just run deep every play. They have to run other routes so they can set up the shots when the team does take shots.
But while other WRs can run those other routes too, they can't consistently threaten deep the way those guys do.
