Just adding info.
In 1979, the 9-7 Rams took a weak division and went to the superbowl.
That year the 10-6 Washington team was third in the NFC East and missed the playoffs.
If we went back in time and used the "best record only no divisions" formula to change things, the Rams are excluded from the 79 playoffs.
Yet at the time Rams v. Steelers was considered one of the best superbowls.
