Tradition is one thing and common sense is another. Those arguing for tradition, I think are forgetting that the divisions used to be larger and have a bigger impact on a team. 5 or 6 teams in the division and a 12 game schedule meant that the division record was pivotal. Now, with only 4 teams in a division and a 16 game schedule, that's only 6 out of 16 games and really shouldn't be the primary factor in playoff seedings.
The way the league is set up now, conferences barely mean anything, much less divisions. I'd be all for switching to a system that rewards the best records.
