The previous two seasons he played outstanding. There was little reason to question giving him an extension. The McVay offense was clicking, we were in the playoffs, we had 1000 yard receivers, it looked like everything had fallen in place.
Obviously this season has given us pause. But in the bigger picture he's been down one star RB, an OL in disarray, the loss of his QB coach and McVay being unable to find a solution to defensive formations designed to stop him.
Is Goff all that? Probably not. Is he a horrid mistake? Certainly not. He's likely destined for a Jim Everett kind of career.
My personal take on him is that he's at his best with a one read passing game. When he's asked to read the field, or find a second receiver, or hold the ball to long he gets really really sloppy and inaccurate.
