McVay absolutely needed Cooks to run his offense. But as he has had to adapt to what defenses are throwing at him, and the lack of time Goff has had in the pocket, Cooks might now be a luxury. Thru 5 games Goff was last in deep balls (20+ yards downfield) attempted (5.9%). So to me, guys like Woods and kupp become even more valuable and a deep threat making 18 mil per is looking like an anchor around the Rams cap.
I don't think Gurley is right physically, but he can still contribute in a big way. Cooks can't if they can't get him the ball deep.
Both contracts don't look great IMO.
Good point on McVay having to adapt his offense. That said, McVay needed Cooks to pull defenders so that there was space for Woods and Kupp. Wouldn't that still apply even if Goff isn't targeting him as much?
The threat is still there.
Gurley can contribute but he doesn't seem worth it especially now that we have Henderson. Henderson's only played a little but from what I can tell, our offense wouldn't miss a beat if they just gave him all of the snaps. IOW, Gurley may have already been replaced.
