The key point regarding not having 1st round picks the next 2 years is the loss of the chance to acquire top talent cheaply.
The 5 year thing is sloppy reporting. It doesn’t focus on the real concern going forward. Since we have tied up so much money in Goff, Donald, and likely Ramsey and a few others, we will have a much more difficult time adding quality FA than we did before the costly contracts.
But if it makes you feel better to list all the guys on the roster who were first round picks, then rave on.
The bottom line is that Snead and company have no room for error in the draft now. They need to hit on lower picks at a higher rate than normal. The good news is that they did hit big on guys like Kupp and JJohnson in 2017. But last year not so much as I’m not seeing any great impact from Noteboom, Allen, Franklin, or Obo. This year maybe Rapp, Henderson, Edwards, not sure.
I take your point, max. No getting around the value in getting the relatively inexpensive 1st rounders. But, as you well know, not all 1st rounders are immediate top producers.
On the other hand, having 10 former 1st rounders that are actually producing far exceeds the amount that could have reasonably been expected through merely one team’s own drafting. Probably by a factor of at least 3. Snead’s method is a win now strategy.
Personally, I would prefer a blend of both strategies.
IMO, there’s a happy medium here somewhere.
Well, to you’re point, IMO Snead is a bit of a wildman. His motto, don’t be scared, seems more like, hold my beer.
