Well, there is little doubt about Ramsey’s level of play as would be the case with the two 1sts. JR is definitely legit, so there is that.
But Max’s larger questions about the affordability and sustainability of a top heavy salary roster? And the feasibility of sustaining quality players surrounding them without annual top picks?
Those are legit questions also.
An example of that difficulty lies right under our nose. The Rams skimped on picks/money on their OL in favor of big extensions and look at the results now. A sputtering O and an inconsistent D due to multiple injuries. A 3-3 team that is 3 games behind in the division race.
I see the upside of the trade picks for proven star players. I do. But the question for me is whether there isn’t a happy medium wherein SOME 1sts should be kept to keep the pipeline full with more inexpensive players? I think that we might be in danger of going past that point and might get a “diminishing returns” type of result.
Another thing about these high stakes extensions is illustrated by the Cooks and Gurley contracts. Both are now overpaid based upon current results AND both are uncuttable and untradeable for a couple more years. And both players have injury issues to further muddy the waters.
This whole topic has many moving parts. I’m gonna trust that Snead/McVay know what they’re doing. For now...
