I heard it somewhere, might have been GMFB, might have been Bucky Brooks podcast, that successful NFL teams have 4 pillar, foundational players that they build around, all other players while necessary are expendable. These are the players you pay the optimal coin to and surround with lesser players to an extent. If you buy into this conceit, I love the Ramsey acquisition. Yes you win in the trenches and after you acquire your four foundational pillars that is what you concentrate on but I believe the Rams have the perfect set up. (Provided if TG ever returns to close to his peak performance). You would want a franchise
QB, a workhorse multidimensional RB, an elite pass rusher and a shutdown cover corner. At his best TG is the best running back in the league, some argue Barkley with the Gmen but that is more potential than actual production. Jalen Ramsey is one of the top 2-3 corners in the league. Goff while not at the Mahomes, Wilson level is a good enough franchise qb to average 30 points a game and lead a team to the Super Bowl. Of course AD is the back to back DPOY (nuff said). Before the Ramsey trade the Rams 4 pillars (high paid at position players) were Goff, Gurley, AD and Cooks. Cooks while ok isn't at the top of his position in the league so why pay him as such? There are cheaper equivalents out there that offer just about the same thing but that is an argument going forward. The point is IF we can see the best Gurley, there isn't a team in the league that can come close to the Rams, having 4 elites (2 on offense, 2 on defense). Chiefs (Mahomes, Kelsey, Hill, & Clark (?)), Patriots (Brady, Gilmore, Eddleman, Gordon/Van Noy), Eagles (Wentz, Cox, Ertz, Graham), Saints (Brees, Kamara, Thomas, Cam Jordan). The Saints come closest but 3 out of their 4 are on offense. Our core four are not only at optimal positions but also with the exception of Goff and provided Gurley's return to form, are the absolute best at the optimal positions.
