But if a FG attempt -in the usual manner-is missed a returner can still grab the ball and run with it-even though its a so-called "miss"-meaning the ball would then be placed where the runner is tackled rather than the LOS. What if the FG misses and lands on the 10 yd line-its still a live ball isn't it-if its moving and a defensive player can pick it up and run right ? What your saying is that if the defensive "returner" doesn't pick up the ball its dead and returned to the LOS ?

I suppose what I'm asking is does the "punter" ( in the normal sense) always have to punt the ball to move it downfield. Can he touch it on the ground and throw it long (we did that on the playground) If he drop kicks it does he always run the risk its an attempted FG and if missed it comes back to the LOS ?
