He wasn't exposed though.
He's a vested veteran so that wasn't waivers. For someone else to sign him, he would have to want to go along with it. So odds are, he was in on this all along. He knew he was going to be cut temporarily and re-signed.
Why him?
Chances are he's the only multi-million dollar contract that's a one-year. So they clear what they have to clear and re-sign him and no other consequences.
Point here is that if he were a quality LOT someone would offer him big money. He’s not so he took a pay cut. My take is he’s a JAG at best and a penalty machine at worst.
Bottomline is GRob was a bust, especially at #2 overall. Lots of debate over whether it was a foreseeable mistake; there were draft analysts on both sides so it wasn’t clearly a bad decision at the time. My view was it was a swing for the HOF with legit risk due to inexperience. Before the draft Ross Tucker basically said the same thing, he thought GRob had freakish talent but saw risk of being penalty machine.
