Problem here is people need to remember these are rookies who are learning what they're doing in the scheme while matching up with a higher level of competition. And then they're not just playing one position but multiple, which makes it harder.
From that perspective starting with Edwards he had a good game. He was thrown in there at LT first series and acquitted himself quite well, didn't win every snap but he won a lot of them and more importantly looked solid executing scheme (wasn't confused or lost at all).
Evans looked better on the run execution. He has decent feet, but needs a lot of work vs speed rushers on the edge with that kick slide. Of the two he's the guy who will require more time to settle in, and that's fine it's not like he's a top 10 pick who is expected to start.
Honestly I think some people shouldn't watch preseason games. It requires you to keep in mind what the coaches are after and accept it. Rams use it to help them make good decisions on their lower roster and I think that is the right approach.
Except for the inability to run block or pass protect, our OL backups played pretty well, Merlin. And were a big help in racking up those 3 points. Lol.
You're not going to get stellar production if you
* field 5 inexperienced OL together against the other teams defensive 1s and 2s
* on top of it, have them all switching positions during the game
The Rams are simply not interested in having the offense look good as a unit. They are interested in stressing these guys then coaching them up, and assessing their play. In other words what they are doing is developing depth.
Casual OL watchers will see nothing good in that.
Veteran OL watchers are already saying you can tell there are players in that mix (like Edwards).
This fact is simply inescapable and there's only one way to legitimately factor it in---play OL the way the Rams do in the pre-season and you are NOT going to see coherent units playing effectively as a group. If you don't account for that you're just misleading yourself.
BUT it serves a real purpose.
