Most of EVERYTHING is mediocre. But we know we can find good restaurants, books, clothes, etc. We can also find good reporters and sports media info. There is no "the media is the same thing everywhere" reality. It is not a uniform thing that way.
...
Thats a good analogy. So what percent of books and restaurants are actually good? Maybe 20%? There are a lot of crappy books and restaurants. so yeah, maybe 20% of the media know what they are talking about.
It's not "knowing what they're talking about." I mean, they know what they're talking about in general basic ways. But some offer more insight and/or pick up on things more clearly and quickly. Plus like books or restaurants, a lot of it is a matter of taste too. So maybe different writers or analysts or talking heads appeal to different people.
The real point is, the thing is not homogenous. No over-generalizations about "THE media" will ever hold up.
...
There will always be people who don't know what they are talking about. And to say none of them are in the media is radically naive.
I have noted in the past that you show an appreciation for even the most absurdly off the wall opinions from the media. I admire that. I'm more of a bland realist.
Actually that doesn't really describe me. I don't appreciate dumb stuff. I just usually don't get bothered by it, and sometimes wonder out loud why others do.
That’s interesting. You’re not bothered by dumb stuff but expect others not to be bothered as well. I’m kind of the opposite. Dumb stuff bothers me but I don’t care if others aren’t bothered.

I dont "expect" that. That's words-in-mouth territory. though probably mildly so. I said I sometimes wonder. And it has nothing to do what what you do so I doubt we're "opposites," just different.
