Report: Owners pitch 18-game season that would limit players to 16 gamesBy:Barry Werner
Talk about a Fantasy Football nightmare.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting on the owners’ desire for an 18-game schedule, which is being resisted by the players. The Collective Bargaining Agreement expires after the 2020 season.
Now, the WSJ report carries a fascinating spin on a season with two extra regular-season games:
One idea owners have proposed: limiting players to 16 games, to assuage health and safety concerns. That would mean even if the Kansas City Chiefs played 18 games, quarterback Patrick Mahomes would play in just 16 of them.
An NFLPA analysis believes two additional games could add as much as $2.5 billion in annual revenue. This would add approximately $15 million to the salary cap for each team in the first year.
Eric Winston, president of the NFLPA, addressed the concerns of the players.
“They’re looking at it like, ‘Hey get back into the mine and start mining coal,’” Winston said.
