If it was about money I would agree with you. But it doesn't look like that's the case. The players get around 47% of all league revenue so if an 18 game season generated an additional $2.5B then the players would get $1.175B of that. It seems that if it was a question of money that more than a billion dollars a year every year would do it.
Here's what the real deal is:

Increasing the rosters to 60 players would add 224 more dues paying members for the NFLPA. From their POV this would largely offset that estimated career longevity reduction from 3.4 to 2.8 years, an estimate that seems flawed to me, btw.
Consider this. The trendline in pro sports seems to be to increase the number of games and to escalate player salaries as TV revenue skyrockets.
NFL season was once 12 games.

The 18 game season is coming, like it or not. Player health or not. It’s just a matter of time. All market forces are pushing in that direction.

Adding more players who will then on average not be eligible for benefits does not help the players.
It's funny, when you try and offer a players perspective, what you really do is offer a management view of what the players perspective should be according to management.
