He is a great teammate, but not an elite talent, he is Chris Long of QB, now if continues to improve and show progress he will eventually get that big contract but I for one would not sign him to a big contract
Big contracts for young qbs are a dime a dozen, ordinary thing. It's not about being "elite."
That's because the alternative is to start over at qb, and on that, you deal with scarcity and the fact that your next choice might not be as good. And not signing your qb to a 2nd contract appears to be a thing that only happens to proven non-starters who have essentially turned out to be, at best, back-ups.
Here are the 1st round qbs since the new CBA (up to 2014) who have signed HIGH-END 2nd contracts and stayed with their original drafting teams:
* Newton, Luck
Here are the ones who didn't. They either signed low-end contracts (low for that year's market, which indicates there were doubts about them), or got injured, or just did not pan out.
* Tannenhill, Bortles, Griffen, Bridgewater, Ponder, Gabbert, Locker, Weedon, Manual, Manziel.
So regardless what WE PERSONALLY might do, what the NFL market says when you do not sign your qb to a 2nd contract, is that for any number of possible reasons, they belong on that 2nd list.
Here are other QBs who signed TOP 2nd contracts since 2012, but were not taken in the first round:
* Wilson, Cousins, Carr, Dalton, Garoppolo
Combining all the 2nd contract guys, regardless of round drafted:
* Newton, Luck, Wilson, Cousins, Carr, Dalton, Garoppolo
Compare it again to the 2nd list from above:
* Tannenhill, Bortles, Griffen, Bridgewater, Ponder, Gabbert, Locker, Weedon, Manual, Manziel.
So again regardless of what we personally would do, if an NFL team doesn't sign Goff they're saying he does not belong on this list at all: Newton, Luck, Wilson, Cousins, Carr, Dalton, Garoppolo
And that he's no better than players on this list (a couple of whom are there because of injury): Tannenhill, Bortles, Griffen, Bridgewater, Ponder, Gabbert, Locker, Weedon, Manual, Manziel
To me? It's obvious he belongs on the 1st list. He's better than anyone on the 2nd list...he just does not belong on that 2nd list. Guys like Goff get signed.
