They knew they could get him in the 4th. Why? I suspect they knew that (1) he's a role player, and (2) there would be a rush on DL in round 1 which means that teams would turn to other things after that.
That means they knew they could save earlier picks for guys they couldn't get in the 4th.
Which would you rather have--- Gaines, and 3 of the following 4 guys: Rapp, Long, Henderson, Evans.
Or those 4 PLUS Gaines?
We should be celebrating their draft smarts. They got a 2-down role player they like to fill a void, and knew he would be there in the 4th.
Oh and I have heard one analyst say Gaines is nearly as good as Lawrence, so why waste a 1st round pick on Lawrence when you can get Gaines in the 4th.
