I agree completely. He is exactly the type that needs to play for his next deal. If he does I would even lean toward the franchise tag in 2020 and then letting him go in 2021 for the comp pick. To me players like Kupp and Johnson are safer bets for long term deals- and at lower price points.
At CB the Rams need to invest a 3rd or 4th round pick to find a CB4 for this year that they can develop. In 2020 consider another trade like they did for Talib and/or using a 1st or 2nd round pick at CB.
Kupp and Johnson are lower price points now but that could change.
Johnson will likely stay at a lower price point because he's a safety but Kupp, as a WR, could cost every bit as much as a CB.
This idea that the safety market went down doesn't hold. There was a one year aberration in 2018. It's back to normal. Collins and Mathieu both signed 2nd contracts in the 14 M range.
2nd contracts for WRs are higher than for safeties, but still, the safety market did not crash, as some in 2018 claimed it had. That was just a one-off. Probably had a lot to do with Reid and collusion issues, just as he claimed.
....
I wasn't referring to the safety market at all. I agree with you on that.
I was referring to the fact that the cost of a safety is lower than the cost of a CB in general.
