Rapp and McGary visit Rams

April 05, 2019 06:27PM
The Los Angeles Rams signed Eric Weddle and Andrew Whitworth is returning for another season, but they’re still exploring their options at both safety and offensive tackle in the upcoming draft. They’ve already been linked to many of the top safety prospects in the class, including Johnathan Abram and Darnell Savage, as well as a handful of offensive linemen.

Now they’re adding a pair of Washington prospects to the growing list of official pre-draft visitors. Safety Taylor Rapp and offensive tackle Kaleb McGary will both visit the Rams before the draft, according to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst. The report came out of Washington’s pro day on Tuesday.

Rapp is one of the most intriguing safeties in the draft for a couple of reasons. He’s a sure tackler and is excellent around the line of scrimmage, but his straight-line speed limits him in coverage. If used properly, though, he can be a great safety and a tone-setter in the secondary.

He’s projected to go anywhere from late in Round 1 to somewhere in the second round, putting him in the Rams’ range at 31 overall. If they trade back, he’d be a great value in Round 2 and would contribute as the third safety on the depth chart, much like the way Marqui Christian was last season.

At his pro day, Rapp ran the 40-yard dash in a disappointing 4.70-4.75 seconds, which shows he isn’t a burner. He’s quicker than fast, which helps around the line of scrimmage and when matching up with tight ends.

As for McGary, he’s also projected to go somewhere in the second round. He played tackle in college but could kick inside to guard where he can better use his strength and power as a blocker. The Rams can use help at both spots with Whitworth possibly retiring after next season and Rodger Saffold now a member of the Titans.

Both Rapp and McGary would be welcomed additions to the roster.
