I have a lot of thoughts on this but not sure any answers... To me, overall, it is more about McVay than personnel..
Yeah I agree. Redzone is scheme, playcalling, and execution. In fact if you look at the top 5 redzone teams (measured by this stat: NFL Team Red Zone Scoring Percentage, TD only) it's fair to ask if their mojo when it comes to this is mostly based on personnel.
They are:
1 Pittsburgh 73.47%
2 Kansas City 73.08%
3 Cincinnati 71.11%
4 New Orleans 68.42%
5 Indianapolis 67.14%
There's no question that on paper a match-up problem at TE would be beneficial, but not every top redzone offense has one. Of my 5 teams, KC has Kelce, and the Bengals have Eifert, though he was hurt last year and not available. Indy has Ebron, while the Saints do not have a stand out there.
So 2 of the top 5 redzone scoring teams have someone who fits the TE as redzone mismatch bill, and 3 don't.
What I conclude from that is that if you want to score a high percentage in the RZ, a big TE would be nice but is far from necessary.
....
I agree ZN. Nice to have but not necessarily must have.
I think the QB makes the most difference. Look at that list:
1. Pittsburgh - Big Ben
2. Kansas City - Mahommes
3. Cincinnati??? - Dalton (anomaly?)
4. New Orleans - Brees
5. Indianapolis - Luck
Four of those five have top QBs.
This is not a knock on Goff but I think it can be agreed on that he does have room for improvement in some aspects of his game and RZ scoring is one of them. I'm not convinced that having a top TE would necessarily improve our RZ TD scoring, although i wouldn't be opposed if we did have one!
