The medical definition of "injury" is "To harm, hurt, or wound. " Its also defined in medicine as "a state in which you are unable to function normally and without pain.". I admit that is not the common lay understanding of what an "injury" is as most people connect the word up with some sort of trauma-such as the torn ACL Gurley suffered at Georgia while running into the end-zone-no contact. Arthritis is the inflammation of joints. It can be constant or periodic. If periodic -when it occurs one cannot function in the same manner as before because of the pain. From what we know now the arthritis was far more significant in the NFC Championship game as well as the Super Bowl than earlier in the season. Otherwise our tailback would most certainly have played more in the two most important games of his career. Hence the more significant "harm" , "pain", or an inability to function normally and without pain"was clearly at the end of the season.
I was talking about the NFL definition, which is that it is some kind of physical trauma (rip, pull, tear, bruise etc) that renders it less likely the player can play. Players can play with things like arthritic conditions, unless they flare up and cause immediate pain and inflammation. The underlying condition does not have to be reported, though if it flares up, the resulting inflammation does.
I saw myself as just clarifying a murky situation. We agree far more than disagree.
If he has an arthritic condition, it can be managed for a couple of years. We don't know though, the news on this is not certain.
It DID flare up in week one though.
