That 5th year option is a big deal when selecting in the 1st round. An underestimated help with player retention and the cap.
And since this year's draft is a good one, the Rams are sitting well at 31. They are going to have some really good players sitting there for them.
They don't need to trade down and accumulate more picks..... they have plenty.
If they trade at all it might be to slightly move up in round 1, or it could involve some middle round pick manipulations.
The 5th year option has value, of course.
But in a hypothetical situation wherein a player ranking plateau exists in Snead’s mind from around #25 to #42-45? In such a scenario the greater Ram value would be in taking a tradedown to fairly early 2nd plus picking up a fairly early 4th. Or maybe a 3rd in ‘20?
There’s no way to know what Snead will do, I mean, even Snead won’t know for sure until he’s on the clock, but I think that it’s fair to say that all options remain upon the table until the picks start falling.
I agree. I think that the Rams would have no problem trading out of the 1st, eschewing that 5th year option if they thought the value was there. In fact, I think there's probably about a 65% chance it happens. Just my speculation of course.
