The question came up about whether picking up Goff's 5th year option and/or paying him the going rate for QBs on their 2nd contract would hurt the Rams chances of making a Conference Championship game (the obvious concern being that paying Goff market value would mean a ton less money to pay other top players).
And the data, limited as it is, says that a team's chances of playing in a Conference Championship game is not affected by whether their QB is a top 5 cap hit or not.
The data does not even begin to address whether Goff deserves a top 5 cap hit or not. All it says that if the Rams decide to go that route that committing that amount of money to Goff will not in an of itself negatively impact the Rams' chances of reaching the Conference Championship game.
