Man, I just don't get all the TE reasoning here....it's like arguing that we need a good FB!!! We don't use TEs in our base offense...we just don't. We used and 2nd round pick - over Kupp & JJIII in the 3rd that year...that's how much McVay liked Everett. Higbee was a 4th rounder. The Rams do not target or use them...but when they do...those two TEs deliver for the most part....with Everett being kinda good at RAC and has good hands.
anyway....here it is....
==================================
linkIt’s fair to say the Los Angeles Rams were a reasonably complete team this past year. They made the Super Bowl after all, and for the most part had at least one high-level player at every position. But the one position which has been lacking for two years now and needs to be addressed this offseason is tight end.
Gerald Everett has shown flashes, but they’ve been nothing more than flashes. In his second season, Everett topped 30 yards just three times and didn’t top 50 yards in a game all season. Everett shouldn’t be abandoned and should still be given time to develop, but the Rams should look to invest in the position in case he never reaches his full potential.
Tyler Higbee has been in the league for three full seasons now, and has yet to top 300 yards in a single campaign. We heard last month that the Vikings had previously offered a seventh-round pick for Higbee, but the Rams turned them down and asked for a sixth. If Minnesota or anyone else offers anything of value this time around, the Rams should take it. They can also cut Higbee and save around $2 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. That money could almost certainly be better used elsewhere.
The Rams are in win-now mode, and a tight end who could immediately contribute to the passing game would be huge. Having a reliable target over the middle would take a ton of pressure off Jared Goff in big games, and would’ve been massive in the Super Bowl when the Patriots were playing such great coverage on all of the Rams’ receivers.
Neither Higbee nor Everett caught a pass in the Super Bowl, and neither of them was even targeted despite Goff attempting 38 passes. That doesn’t suggest that Sean McVay has much confidence in either player, and the Rams need a tight end they can count on. McVay came up in the league as the Redskins’ tight ends coach and got great years out of Jordan Reed in Washington, so he clearly knows how to use the position.
There are a number of tight ends set to be free agents who would be an immediate upgrade, like Jared Cook. The Rams could also take a high-upside, low-cost flyer on someone like Tyler Eifert, who is set to be an unrestricted free agent and has been one of the league’s better tight ends when healthy. Given Eifert’s extremely lengthy recent injury history he could likely be had for pretty cheap, and Les Snead should at least inquire.
This year’s draft class is also widely regarded as having several potential top tight ends, and the Rams could take one high if they aren’t happy with Everett’s development internally. Iowa’s Noah Fant is currently projected to go right around the end of the first round, and could be a good fit for the Rams at 31st overall.
Whatever route the front office chooses to go, they need to do something. Even if that means just signing a cheap veteran stopgap to split time. Throwing darts at the board can’t hurt at this point, and it would be hard for the Rams to get less production from the tight end spot than they have the past couple of seasons.==================================
It's like someone saying we need a big NT for a 3-4 defense...right?! Well, it's not that essential in Wades version of the 3-4, apparently.
McVay's offense is the same thing....the 2 TE set is
not what our offense does most of the time. If McVay changes and wants to do more of it in 2019??? fine...draft another TE...but then, we take Kupp or Woods off the field...maybe take Cooks off and
sit them for a 4.7/40 rookie TE who can block better.
Anyway, I'm a 3WR kinda guy and I really like how McVay uses them and then alternates the 2TE sets. I think our DEFENSE is what needs lotsa attention on DL, LB, EDGE & DB depth. If anything on offense???
OL, OL, OL starter/depth.
