OK, the answer is "yes." But maybe not quite what you meant.
He got beat. That's where his technique may stink (I don't know anything about playing DB, so what do I know?). But after he got beat, maybe his play was a lot more "heady" than we all think. He came barrelling in, perhaps figuring that he's gotta do something and that's all he's got left at the distance he was at. Turning around to make a play on the ball may have slowed him down and put him out of position.
So his options were:
1) Continue being beat, let Lewis get the catch, and the game is probably over after that.
2) Smack the guy as close to the ball arriving as he can and pray the ref doesn't throw the flag... maybe it works
Given those options, #2 might have been the right call. It certainly worked out.
